Laurel Hester war eine Beamtin der Polizei von New Jersey und starb am 18. Februar 2006 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey an Lungenkrebs. Bis zu ihrem Tode setzte sie sich für die Gleichbehandlung gleichgeschlechtliche Lebenspartner im Sterbefall ein und sorgte damit insbesondere in den USA für viel Wirbel. Hintergrund war, dass sie zusammen mit ihrer Lebenspartnerin Stacie Andree ein Haus besaß und diese im Falle von Hesters Tod aufgrund der Gesetzeslage in Ocean County keinen Anspruch auf Pensionszahlungen hatte - was jedoch nicht im Falle von zweigeschlechtlichen Paaren galt. Wenige Tage vor ihrem Tod führten ihre Bemühungen schließlich zum Erfolg und angestrebten Ergebnis...
